The translucent water is also a staple at this beach, making it perfect for snorkeling. While the reef and sea life remain abundant, some sections are unfortunately bleached and dead, highlighting the urgent need for conservation.

However, there’s hope. If you venture past these sections, you will find more fish and vibrant, healthy soft corals. If you visit during jellyfish season, wear your rashguard. 

Also, don’t get caught up in the beauty of marine life and venture too far from shore. It’ll exhaust you to swim back after going too far into the ocean. 

4. Escambrón Beach (San Juan)

Escambrón Beach stands out as a premium San Juan snorkeling spot among its many beaches. This popular destination also neighbors the renowned Caribe Hilton Hotel. 

Escambrón Beach has unique rock formations protecting it from the Atlantic Ocean’s formidable waves. Because of its accessible location, this beach attracts many snorkelers and divers, so the fish are accustomed to people and will let you get close to them.

5. Steps Beach in Tres Palmas Marine Reserve (Rincón)

The best time to visit Steps Beach is during the summer months, like July, when the surf is manageable, and the water is calm with excellent visibility. It’s one of the top snorkeling spots on Puerto Rico’s west coast.

When you visit, check out the largest Elk Horn coral gardens in the Caribbean. The reef has abundant living coral, offering a home for Blue Tang schools, sea turtles, and other marine animals. Although tempting, please don’t touch the coral as it could destroy them. 

6. Shacks Beach (Isabela)

Shacks Beach is located along Puerto Rico’s northwest coast and is among the top snorkeling and diving beaches. The winter season is too harsh for snorkeling, so summer is the best time to visit. 

The underwater seascape features healthy, living coral. These structures are so large that they create caves and tunnels that expert snorkelers can swim through. However, you don’t need to swim through these caves as the exterior offers sufficient living coral and diverse tropical fish to explore. 

The reef is shallow with many crevices, and the current can be strong. Watch out for sea urchins. Since this isn’t a beginner snorkeling spot, it’s best to explore with a friend.

7. Icacos Island (Fajardo)

Fajardo is known for its bioluminescent bay and the uninhabited Icacos Island, which is popular for its natural beauty and tranquility.

You can take a water taxi from Las Croabas or book a catamaran from Villa Marina or Marina Puerto del Rey, south of Las Croabas. Please note that you can only visit the island on a day trip. Since there are no shops, you’ll have to take all you need.

8. Crash Boat Beach (Aguadilla)

A cement pier extends into its crystal-clear water, and you’ll find tropical fish swimming underneath it. The remnants of an old wooden pier also host diverse marine life. If you’re a beginner, snorkel in this area. 

If you’re an expert snorkeler, continue 20 feet down the wooden pier’s remnants. You’ll see schools of squid, sea snakes, and vibrant coral. While the beach can get quite crowded, the snorkeling area is usually much calmer.
