About Humacao

Located in eastern Puerto Rico, Humacao is around an hour drive away from the international airport in San Juan. Established in 1793, the town is named after Taino chief Jumacao.  Humacao has a strong connection to the sea and the sand, which is symbolized in the town’s colors- blue and yellow. The town has some light industries and products like coffee and sugarcane, which are grown in the surrounding areas. However, it is most known for the beach resort community of Palmas Del Mar – the largest resort in Puerto Rico covering 2,750 acres. From stunning beaches to lush nature reserves, there is a lot to discover and enjoy in Humacao. Plus, the town has all the major facilities you will need, and it is not far from the San Juan metropolitan area.

Things to Do in Humacao

While there is a lot to do in Humacao, it can also be an excellent “base camp” for exploring the south-eastern region of Puerto Rico.

Explore the Humacao Nature Reserve

This is a 3,186-acre haven for communing with nature and indulging in adventurous activities. The area has swamps, marshes, and lagoons and is formed by a mix of seawater and the Anton Ruiz River. It is a vibrant ecosystem with trails for hiking and biking.  The coastline is spectacular, and a few of the stunning beaches in the reserve are among the best beaches in Puerto Rico. Some areas are great for families to enjoy a picnic or spend a few hours fishing. The watersport activities include kayaking and paddleboarding.

Visit Monkey Island

About half a mile away from the shore, this small island is a unique destination as its only permanent residents are over 2,000 free-ranging rhesus macaque monkeys. The monkeys were originally brought from India and the research center was established in 1938.  At present, the 38-acre island is the oldest continuously operating rhesus monkey colony in the world. While visitors are not allowed on the island, a short kayak ride from Humacao will take you close enough to view the monkeys.

Enjoy the Punta Santiago Beach

The combination of white and black sands along with swaying palm trees gives this beach an incredibly beautiful setting. The mile-long beach allows you to enjoy the view of the mountains meeting the sea while relaxing on the sands. In addition, the remote coves around the beach are also worth exploring.

Walk Through the Town

There are plenty of hidden gems in Humacao such as the Concatedral Dulce Nombre de Jesús church. Beyond that, there are venues showcasing works of art from prominent Puerto Rican artists. The beautiful Casa Roig Museum displays the works of famed architect Antonin Nechodoma. Those interested in astronomy can visit the astronomical observatory at the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao. It provides opportunities for visitors to observe significant astronomical events.

Relish the Cuisine

As with the rest of the island, the cuisine is an integral part of the local culture in Humacao. You will find restaurants offering popular local dishes like tostones, mofongo, chicken asopao, and tembleque. A few restaurants also craft some creative dishes with fresh seafood supplied by the local fishermen. One traditional dish worth tasting in the town is “granos” or grains from a kiosk. These are delicious rice fritters filled with cheese.  find your dream home in puerto rico
