About Loiza

Some lores say that the name Loiza is derived from a renowned female cacique or tribal chieftain, named Loaíza or Yuíza. In the 16th century, Loiza was settled by the Yoruba tribe from the regions of West Africa. In 1719, it was declared a town by the Spanish Government. Located about 35 minutes away from San Juan, Loiza is situated on the coastal plains, with flat terrain interspersed with dense mangrove forests. There are small farms in the surrounding area growing fruits and sugarcane. Fishing is also an important activity, making the sea a major source of economic growth for the town. Many visitors visiting the eastern coast overlook Loiza and choose some of the other best beaches in Puerto Rico in the area. However, tourism remains the prime economic driver for Loiza. In truth, hardly a few destinations in Puerto Rico offer the blend of culture, history, and natural beauty that Loiza does.

Things to Do In and Around Loiza

Loiza is well-known for its African-inspired traditions and festivities. Every aspect of life in this dynamic town tells the stories of a community with a deep-rooted Afro-Puerto Rican history. Anyone with a deep love for the island’s heritage and culture will find Loiza to be one of the best places to live in Puerto Rico.

Explore the Beaches

Although Loiza is known more for its cultural richness than its beaches, it does offer some delightful spots for beachgoers. The most popular choice for families is Playa La Posita which has a natural rock barrier leading to the formation of a calm pool of clear water. This makes it a great choice for bathing or lazing on the sand. Experienced surfers will love the beautiful Playa Aviones with its high surf. For the best tropical views, visit Piñones Beach where the mangrove forests meet the dunes. The Vacia Talega is another gem with calm blue waters and golden sand.

Visit the María de la Cruz Cave

Excavated in 1948, this large cave has yielded archaeological remains like human bones, pottery, animal remains, and marine fossils. Archaeologists consider these to be the remains of the first inhabitants on the island from the archaic period, dating back to 4,000 BC. Taino artifacts from later periods were also found here. Interestingly, the cave is also one of the largest bee sanctuaries in the Caribbean. You can undertake a course in beekeeping or join a bomba dance class here. The area also has an impressive art gallery featuring works from local artists.

Enjoy the Festivals

If you want to feel the heartbeat of Loiza, this festival is a must-see. The Fiesta de Santiago Apóstol is a celebration of the patron saint of Loiza, St. James. This grand annual event takes place in late July and continues for a week.  This is the period when the town is at its most colorful state with parades accompanied by dancing and concerts. The celebrations also involve the wearing of costumes and traditional coconut masks, making it a true sight to behold.

Check Out the Cuisine

A prime attraction of Loiza is Piñones- a range of small kiosks selling finger-licking fried delights like pasteles and alcapurrias. Other fares worth trying out are crisp seafood and pork skewers. You can combine these with fresh coconut water called coco frío or a fruit frappe.  Beyond the traditional fare, the restaurants in the town offer a diverse range of dishes making Loiza a must-visit destination for gastronomes. Many of these restaurants are family-owned and proud of their African culinary heritage. Prepared from fresh ingredients, every dish has an unmatched volume of flavor and love poured into it. find your dream home in puerto rico
