About Salinas

Founded in 1840, Salinas is a fishing town on Puerto Rico’s southern coastline. Known as the fishing capital of the island, the small municipality is approximately 43 miles from the capital city of San Juan.  Some say that the name Salinas arises from the salt flats that used to cover the area decades back. Today, there are hardly any traces of the salty past of the town. There are around 100 islets and cays around Salinas along with a few mangrove islands. The town is also known for Camp Santiago, a military training facility. Primarily being a fishing community, Salinas has a special environment- you will find lots of colorful fishing boats lying around the town. There are a few agricultural farms that cultivate fruits like bananas and papaya. Also, it has a thriving poultry industry.  Salinas is most famous for being the birthplace of Mojo isleño, the signature island sauce with a zesty flavor that is over 80 years old. With its regular rich haul from the sea, the town has some of the best seafood restaurants in Puerto Rico.
