About Isabela

Originally, the land around the town was ruled by the Taino chief Mabodamaca in the first half of the 16th century. The town was founded in 1819 and was named in honor of Queen Isabel of Castile.

While primarily a beach town, the geography of Isabela is unique. It has bordering mountains, cliffs, lakes, caves, and mangrove forests. The town is primarily known for its beaches and conditions ideal for surfing, resulting in a thriving tourism industry. Retail trade and manufacturing are other industries driving the economy.

A drive from San Juan airport to Isabela takes around an hour and a half. The Aguadilla airport is closer and the drive takes around 20 minutes.

Things To Do In and Near Isabela Puerto Rico

With a population of just above 40,000, Isabela allows you to enjoy oceanfront living away from the tourist throngs of San Juan. Just like any other peaceful Caribbean beach town, life in Isabela revolves around the ocean.

The prime attractions are the Atlantic’s majesty and water-based activities. Aside from the immersive island culture and gastronomic delights, a session of golf at the Royal Isabela Golf Club is another unforgettable experience.

The town offers all the modern conveniences a family needs including shopping and dining destinations, as well as schools. While there are premium estates in the town, lovely upscale condos and single-family homes with gorgeous beach views are also available.

Visit the Beaches

For any visitor to Isabela, Jobos is a must-visit beach. Its perfectly manicured setting with clear turquoise waters remains free from crowds. The contrast between the rock walls around the beach and the cobalt-blue waters makes the setting picture-perfect.

The big swells in Jobos attract surfers during every season. On a cautionary note, there are no lifeguards and the riptides are very strong around the beach.

A short walk from the beach will take you to the Pozo de Jacinto area. Here, the view crash of waves on the jagged volcanic rocks is a delight for photographers.

For snorkeling, the waters around Montones Beach and Shacks Beach are the best options. The Playa Pozo Teodoro with its crystal clear waters and dreamy setting is great for families to spend an entire day.

Walk Along The Paseo Lineal de Isabela

The Isabela Linear Coastal Walkway is a 4-mile-long walking and biking pathway that runs along Highway 466. An early morning walk is an excellent option for enjoying the striking coastal views while reaching the beaches of Jobos, Montones, and Pozo Teodoro.

There are plenty of opportunities where you can take a break for food and drinks. If walking or jogging is not what you prefer, there are electric scooters available for rent as well.

Explore The Downtown Area

Downtown Isabela is a beautiful place to enjoy a relaxed afternoon in a cafe. The plaza is built around the church and the entire area is aesthetically designed with some eye-catching displays of public art.

This is also where fairs and live concerts are organized – great for experiencing the local art and culture. The myriad shops and eateries around the area make it a great spot for shoppers and food enthusiasts as well.

Go For Hikes

The rugged and beautiful terrain of the Guajataca State Forest has multiple hiking trails that are perfect for nature lovers looking to stay away from the crowds. There are recreational areas and camping spaces in the forest as well. Bird lovers will find various colorful species nesting in the forests.

Another excellent place for family hikes is the Gujataca Railroad Tunnel, a memoir from the days of sugarcane cultivation. At the end of the tunnel, there is a trail along the Atlantic Ocean, offering bewitching views. An easy hike along the trail will take you to Playa Pelicano – a gorgeous beach.
